# METADATA Data Description:
#
# ABSTRACT:
# The report authors maintained notes detailing the process that
# was used to do the analysis for this report. The pertinent
# notes were included in the appendix of the report.
# Some details that did not warrant publication reside
# in these notes. These notes are being archived in the
# event that they might be of use to future water-use
# efforts aimed at stream-valley aquifers.

ARKANSAS DOCUMENTATION AND NOTES

Last edited date: August 5, 2005

The Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission (ASWCC) monitors water-use data in Arkansas in cooperation with the USGS. Water users that withdraw more than 0.05 Mgal/d from ground water must report their water use to ASWCC by completing a water-use registration form. Users in the categories of public supply, self-supplied industrial, and irrigation complete these forms. In addition, the Arkansas Department of Health, Division of Engineering supplements the public supply information and the Arkansas Industrial Development Foundation supplements the information about self-supplied industries.

In 2000 total water withdrawals in Arkansas was approximately 10,900 Mgal/d. Ground-water withdrawals (6,920 Mgal/d) represented 63 percent of total withdrawals. Ground-water withdrawals in the categories of public supply, self-supplied industrial, and irrigation are 97 per cent of total ground-water withdrawals (6,708 Mgal/d).

In Arkansas no withdrawals were designated as coming from other aquifers or the alluvial aquifers category. It is believed that potential stream-valley aquifer withdrawals were allocated to the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (It is reasonable to attribute stream-valley aquifer water us to the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer in the original 2000 water-use compilation because no other stream-valley alluvial category was provided for Arkansas at that time.). Estimates of Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer withdrawals for 2000 were 6,370 Mgal/d. By category, the largest withdrawals were from irrigation (6,320 Mgal/d), followed by public supply (40.5 Mgal/d), and then by self-supplied Industrial (5.74 Mgal/d).

The caption for figure 23 on page F8 of the Ground Water Atlas shows three alluvial aquifers in addition to the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. They are the Arkansas River alluvial aquifer, the Ouachita-Saline Rivers alluvial aquifer, and the Red River alluvial aquifer. These three alluvial aquifers have characteristics that typify stream valley aquifers, and thus their withdrawals were mapped to an associated SVA.

Twenty-eight out of 75 counties in Arkansas was identified as containing potential SVA withdrawals. The Red SVA is found in Lafayette, Miller, Columbia, Little River, Hempstead, Sevier, and Howard counties. The Ouachita-Saline SVA is found in Pike, Nevada, Clark, Dallas, Hot Springs, Hempstead, Ouachita, Calhoun, Cleveland, Grant, and Saline counties. The Arkansas SVA is found in Crawford, Sebastian, Franklin, Logan, Johnson, Pope, Yell, Perry, Conway, Pulaski, and Faulkner counties. Site-specific data provided a means to differentiate Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer withdrawals from Arkansas SVA withdrawals in Pulaski County. The sediment age (Recent, Holocene, and Pleistocene) was used to separate wells screened in potential stream-valley aquifer deposits from wells screened in the older, Late Cretaceous to middle Eocene, Mississippi Embayment aquifer. In certain cases, the USGS Arkansas Water Use specialist (Terry Holland, June 3, 2005 written communication) evaluated withdrawals from specific wells to determine whether the source was an SVA deposit rather than an isolated alluvial deposit. Eight-digit hydraulic unit codes (HUC) information was used as a check of the SVA mapping.

Stream-valley aquifer disaggregation produced withdrawals of 17.4, 7.22, and 0.21 Mgal/d for the Red, Arkansas, and Ouachita-Saline stream-valley aquifers, respectively. The irrigation category had the largest withdrawals (19.1 Mgal/d). The analysis reduced withdrawals attributed to the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer to 6,345 Mgal/d from 6,370 Mgal/d.
